no audio after converting avi to vcd

First of all, I downloaded an .avi file of about 730 mbs. I've split the .avi file into 2 parts at a keyframe. I then opened part 1 in TMPGEnc and loaded the video. I then set the configurations to the specs that G-Spot & VirtualDubMod gave me. I then set the output stream type to System(Video and Audio) and hit the Encode Button to convert. After about 2 hours it was done encoding, only with no audio in the mpeg file!
My settings were: 23.97 fps (NTSC Film), CBR-1150, NTSC 4:3, 352 X 240 resolution, Audio was 48000 at 224.

I'm not sure how to separate the audio from the video, if that's what needs to be done, but I thought that TMPGEnc would convert the 48000 to 44100 during the encoding.

In TMPGEnc, click on the "Audio" tab and change the frequency to 44,100Hz



B) 1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box


The audiostream is probably in either .AC3 format or Variable Bitrate MPEG Layer 3 (VBR .MP3).

If it proves to be .AC3:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...


If it proves to be VBR:

Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use NanDub (or VirtualDubMod) to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into NanDub
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose - and choose "No compression(PCM)"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).
Open TMPGEnc and FIRST "drag and drop" the silent .AVI onto it, then do the same with the .WAV file.

I've finally got it working. The file is an mp3 compressed audio stream. I used VirtualDub to make a WAV file and to make an AVI without sound. I then used TMPGEnc to combine the two to make an MPG with audio & video. I followed the steps you outlined in response to another poster. I do have one other question, though. In your response to one poster with a similar problem, you said that after making a WAV file and an AVI with no sound, to close Nandub or VirtualDub and reopen it, select audio--no audio, file open--open AVI w/o sound, video--direct stream copy, audio--full stream copy, audio--compression--mp3, and save as an AVI with a new name.
Just curious why we would need to do this final step, since after we created the WAV & AVI w/o sound, we could then go to TMPGEnc and encode to an mpeg file.

I can only speculate with regard to that posting, that the desired end filetype was an .AVI file, rather than an MPEG-1VideoCD (Either that, or I harmlessly goofed ;>})
