HELP! When I convert my avi-mpeg, the widescreen does not stay!Video is Squished!

When I convert my avi movie to a mpeg movie (to make a vcd) it does not stay in widescreen. Instead, it like squishes the picture together making the people on the screen look VERY THIN!! How can I make the mpeg resolution the same as the avi resolution??

the resolution for vcd is 350 by 288 if you want widescreen somat like 16 *9 then its tough cos vcd is 350 by 288.

use tmpenc to do your encodeing when you have loaded the file press load and choose vcd pal or ntsc is it from the menu then it will set the resolution for you 4.3 wich is 28" screen full
rather than 16.9 widescreen.

if the numbers are a little funny mainly to setarip then this is because i go on a pal bases and uk tele but the bacics are the same okay

The converter I used was both Nero Burning Rom and also "avi2vcd". Both movies I converted were in widescreen mode and after they were converted, they changed to a different resolution like fullscreen. I think I just need a resolution converter or a better avi-mpeg converter that allows me to set the resolution to convert in widescreen mode

but what I want to do is keep it in widescreen. Instead,after I encode from avo-to-mpeg, it changes it to fullscreen and really doesnt do a good job of it, all it does is take teh widescreen and smash the sides in until it gets to fullscreen leaving everything squished.

okay use tmpgenc to convert your file once in at the bottom on the right there is three buttons, laod,save and settings not necesserally in that order.

press load, choose ntsc vcd (double click)
then click settings
select advance
at the top there will be some boxes with info
the third one down is aspect ratio

in the drop down box there will be ntsc 4.3
ntsc 6.9 6.9 is widescreen
select this and you could also untick keep aspect ratio and put in the screen size manually in the boxes before.

i aint had this problem myself but try it if it dont work delete the mpeg version and you still have your avi.

ok so your saying AFTER I have converted from avi-to-mpeg, I should then load teh mpeg versio onto this tmpgenc program and change the resolution from there?? And if so, where do I find this program?

thats the address, tmpgenc is used to convert avi to mpeg1, and to split and join mpeg, however you could try re-encoding an empeg aint tryed.

thanks a lot. Its working great. All I did was custmoize the size so that it would be the same after the conversion instead of smashed together. And its only taking 4.5 hours instead of 15 like the other crappy program I had. Oh and do you by any chance know how to rip DVD's, then convert to avi or mpeg and then make a vcd outa that? That would be graet to do that becuae I dont have a fast connection to DL the movies so instead I could just rip them from DVD's. Any info??

Although there are many alternative methods for each procedure, this is what I do:

From Ripping through VCD (by me)

1) Rip DVD with Clad v.1.71(not MDEC, the one I use is an older, totally reliable version - not to say that the MDEC version is unreliable)

2) Convert to .AVI using Flask v.0.594PX3 (improved conversion time versus "plain vanilla" 0.594 - and less prone to lockup)
A) Using DivX v.3.11 codec (Fast Motion 910kbps, keyframe every 10 seconds)
B) Using PCM (uncompressed) audio at 48,000Khz (Maintains synchronization of audio and video)

3) Load .AVI into VirtualDub v.1.4D
A) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
B) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
C) Under "Audio", click on "Conversion", select "44,100Khz"
D) Under "Audio", click on "Compression" select "MP3", "44,100Khz", "96Kbps"
E) Save revised .AVI with new filename

Then, to create a VCD:

1) Load .AVI file into TMPGEnc
2) Set to "System Video and Audio" (lower right side)
3) Click on "Setting" radio button
4) Click on "System" tab, change mode to "MPEG1-VideoCD" (from default of "MPEG1")
5) Click on "Advanced" tab, change "Video arrange method" to "Center (Custom Size"), change dimensions to 352x288 or 352x240
6) Change "Source aspect ratio" to either "4:3 525 line (NTSC 704x480)", "4:3 525 line (NTSC)", or "16:9 525 line (NTSC)" - If you're in the PAL world choose either of the two similar PAL settings instead
7) Under the "Video" tab, change the dimensions to 352x288 or 352x240 (Note: "Video" tab mode of "MPEG1" is okay)
8) Change "Rate Control Mode" to "Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR)
9) Press "Start"

Note that if your video runs longer than 60 minutes, you'll have to subsequently split your VCD-MPG file in two. This too can be easily and precisely accomplished using TMPGEnc. Under the "Files" dropdown menu, click on "MPEG Tools" and select the "Merge & Cut" tab. Once again, make sure to change the mode to "MPEG1-Video CD". Load your file and enter a new (.MPG) name in the "Output file" box. Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL file's name in the window, which will bring you to the cutting area. Select your desired start and end points for the first half, click on "Okay" which will bring you back to the first window and generate (in a sequence of three automated steps) the first new file. To create the second new file, repeat the steps starting with "Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL..." (be extra patient with the second half, as the program has to do more seeking to establish the beginning of the new file)

While conveting to AVI the video looks destorted, is ther anyway that I can maintain the video clearity.

when I try to make the AVI using flaskMPEG... for the audio codec in the audio compression dialog box, I selected the format PCM But in the attributes list box I only get the 44100 Htz, do you have any idea how can I ge the 48000 Hz listed there? Do I need to download some extra codec or something.. and where to find it?

I am gonna try both ways probably, or until one works out.

Alos, does anyone know what I am talking about when I say that the avi is in widescreen mode(black bars on top and bottom) and that after I convert, it takes the blakc bars away but like zooms in and squishes the sides in until its in like 1:1 format. Which then makes it look crappy with skinny people and things. Anyone know how to keep the black bars on top and bottom or even what I am talking about? ??

If you are using any variant of Flask v.0.594, do the following, which may provide the answer:

1) Click on "Options"

2) Click on "Global Project Options"

3) Click on the "Audio" tab

4)If, toward the bottom "Same as input" has a checkmark and "44,100" has a dot next to it, uncheck "Same as input" and select "48,000". then put a check into "Same as input".
