If I have .avi file, do i have to convert it to mpeg to make a VCD or avi files can directly be used for this purpose?

no, in order to burn onto a cd, all aVi's must be encoded to MPEG. Use Tmpgenc to do this. www.tmpgenc.com and download it and the VFP file.
