    Excellent XVCD quality

I've been away for a while but I've decided to come back and see what's going on. I have recently gotten back into ripping DVD's and since I don't yet have the new Lite-On DVD player that reads Divx files and I am not connecting a PC to my TV to play them back I've decided to go back to the good ole standby of the VCD.

But I've been fooling around with making XVCD's and I have to say that I am VERY impressed with the way they look! With the exception of some (very few mind you) MPEG block noise it looks almost as good as a DVD. I've been using TMPG and changed the resolution to 740x480 and instead of using the CBR setting I'm using the CQ setting with the max bitrate set to 2550.

I've also mastered the use of the VCDEasy program and have made some very good DVD-style menus complete with transitions into other menu pages and into the movie. Even though the average movie spans 3-4 discs I don't care because I want quality. The only drawback is that it does not support 5.1 surround. But Besweet makes the audio sound really good and helps retain Pro-Logic surround info.

I went with the whole XVCD thing because my player will not work with SVCD but work perfectly with XVCD. I found that my player has a max bitrate of 2600 so I just about max that out.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know some of my success in the VCD arena and to say hey to you all again.

Yeah, it's strange that it can handle the bitrate equal to an SVCD but not the actualy SVCD encoded file. After much fooling around I found that it will play SVCD video normally if there is no sound mixed it but when I add the sound file it screws it all up. So I now know it has something to do with that. Next is to start fooling around with the settings in Besweet to get it just right.
