Tmpegnc Split- system clock ref problem

Using Virtualdub, I took the original divx AVI (25 fps) and saved it to a silent AVI (direct stream copy). I also decompressed the entire audio (was VBR) stream to a wav, converting it from 48khz to 44 using source audio full processing mode.

I then used tmpegnc's ntsc 29.97fps video cd template to create a vcd mpeg, pointing it to use the above seperate files for video/audio input.

The result was a pretty good quality VCD mpeg with audio syncronized fine throught the movie. It was only 69 meg larger than the avi, with some quality loss, but acceptable. THings were going good.

So, I just needed to split that mpeg up. I used tmpegnc mpeg tools on the VCD to do that.

The resulting 2 mpeg's both played back fine and everything seemed ok until it was time to burn the VCD using Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum. Seems the 2 part mpeg is no longer VCD compliant. Everything with the files are OK except for "system clock reference" whatever that is.

It seems like perhaps everything was OK before using tmpegnc to do the mpeg split? not sure. If this is how tmpegnc splits mpeg's, forget it. It split fine, played fine, but rendered it VCD non-compliant somehow. Something about system clock reference. Any mpeg experts out there, can you tell me what this error means?

Hit the add anyway button and be done with it

    - What happens?

Sorry I can't tell you more exacly waht the prob is - I use Nero for the task.

TMPGEnc anyhow is a brilliant MPEG I/II Encoder but definatly not the first choise for Cutting and joinig MPEGs - just roam through the software section of digital-digest and try out alternatives (I only encode 1CD VCDs so I don't have much experence in MPEG-I Cutting. I use MPEG2Schnitt to cut MPEG-II files (German prog - perfect mpeg2 cutting tool) mpeg2cut (based on DVD2AVI) is also an alternative fpr cutting MPEG2 files. (Won't help much with ur MPEG-I file anyhow)

I'd remove the pic - it shows a little too much information about where the file is on your HDD and where u pretty likly got it

Uh, yeah. A little too much info perhaps. Funny thing is, I thought of that and blurred the file path, but I uploaded the wrong picture. Thanks 4 the heads up.

That's too bad about TMPEGnc. It has all the mpeg tools I need, then stops short of splitting mpegs correctly. I just get so tired of downloading so many programs. Seems like all the programs I've tried fall short of being complete and I end up getting another program for the lack of one feature. I don't need an mpeg splitter that bad so I'll pass for now.

You would think that a program with 'MPEG' in it's name would have got the mpeg splitter right. Anyway, that was my first attempt at splitting with tmpegnc AFTER encoding. I already had a dozen programs fail miserably so I gave up mpeg splitting long ago.

I ususually split during the conversion, or split the source AVI but I forgot.

I was looking for an answer more specific to the problem, hoping to learn something. I already know how to work around it without getting more software, but thanks for your input. So, if anyone knows a bit more about this "system clock reference" error, then post it please!

When splitting, did you remember to set the mode to "MPEG1-Video CD", rather than the default of "plain vanilla" MPEG-1?

I had the same problem as you and spent days trying to figure it out. The answer is really simple: In MPEG TOOLS, when cutting the file, make sure you select type MPEG-1 VIDEO CD. I inadvertantly selected the default type of MPEG-1 SYSTEM (AUTO). Since then no problem. Good luck.

Problem is, I needed hard drive space so after I cut, I deleted all but the files that have the problem.

All I have is the two parts that give me the error. I hated to do it, but I simply re-encoded them and now their fine. No significant loss of quality thankfully.

Thanks for the cutting tip. You're right about that one. It was set to 'mpeg-1 system'. I'll remember that next time. If that works out, then it looks like I have my MPEG cutter afterall.

            Thanks. Another problem solved.
