avi to mpeg2 using tmpgenc

I have previously successfully converted avi to mpeg1 using TMPGenc ver. 2.5 (using the wizard - the only thing I change is the speed to get better quality - excellent results playing back in Windows Media Player and also on settop dvd player). Having read that svcd would be even better quality, I converted the same avi to mpeg2 using TMPGenc ver. 2.5. I didn't burn it (because I don't think my DVD player will play svcd), but I did play it back on the PC using PowerDVD and the quality was pretty bad. Any advice??

Also, does anyone know if I can view an mpeg file using Windows Media Player on the whole computer screen (rather than the smallish window in the middle of the screen)?

Right click in the middle of the playing video and select "Full Screen". To simply enlarge it to occupy the full screen (You'll see the difference between these two methods), go to the upper right corner of the Media Player and click on the little "hollow square" which is the standard Windows method of expanding a window (The "_" minimzes the window, while the "X" closes the window/program).

Depending upon the resolution used to create the MPEG file, you may have some black borders (left and right or all four sides).

SVCD-quality: that depends on the input-avi and the bitrate. If the input-avi is only VCD-like-quality it can't get better if you encode it to SVCD. SCVD has more than 2 times the pixels of an VCD, so you will need up to the double bitrate for good quality. And if you didn't allready tried, use TMPGEncs 2-pass-mode for SVCD.

Benderman, I'll try doubling the bitrate on the conversion. Could you explain further the two-pass method.
