Help please. (Getting frustrated)

Can someone help me please because I'm really getting frustrated. I have been trying to rip a dvd for ages. I ripped the dvd finally converted it to avi but when i view it, it has the black lines at the top and bottom and also it has caption which i do not want either. I used smartripper to rip and autogordianknot to convert to avi. Not to mention that after all that my home dvd player can't read avi. Can someone please tell me a good
program which will convert it directly from dvd to mpeg1 or mpeg2, limit it's size to 700MB and remove the black lines and the caption. And if its not too much trouble could you tell me how to remove them?

What program did you use to "Rip" the DVD? Also, what was the original size (gigs) of the DVD before you converted it to AVI with Autogordianknot?
