Problems with AVI conversion using TMPG

I am new to this so please be patient.

I have several AVI downloads in both DivX & XVid which I have used TMPG to convert to VCD compliant MPG files.

It worked for several but would not convert AC3 audio.:

I read in another forum that the Nimo Codec Pack would fix this so installed pack.

After installation nothing was working - inc. WM Player and Real One Player.

I then deleted all codecs and TMPG.

I ant to reinstall whatever I can - but I am unsure what components I need to install and where I can get them from.

I am running XP Pro and am very frustrated with both the system crashing and TMPG causing crashes when it freezes. mad:

    HELP!!

"It worked for several but would not convert AC3 audio."

In TMPGEnc under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority and see if TMPGEnc will accept your Divx/Xvid file.

d/l and install an AC3 audio codec if you don;t have one installed. You can d/l it from the tools section at www.dvdrhelp.com

I am sorry that I have been off air for some time - problems with my computer.

TMPG seems to accept the file but when I get to the final mpg it seems much smaller than the avi file. Is this due to the recoding of audio from AC3 to another type??

Are you using one of the "Project Wizard" templates in TMPGEnc to convert the Divx/Xvid to mpeg? The bitrate setting can affect the size of your file.

Yes Iam using the Project Wizard because it is the only method I have tried.

            Would changing the settings help??

I would just process the Divx/Xvid file with the desired wizard in TMPGEnc while leaving the settings alone. The wizard will make a VCD compliant mpeg-1. Do a "Test" output for 10 minutes or so to check both video and audio quality.

I'll give it another try tonight.

                Thanks for your help

I converted an avi with AC3 codec on the weekend. When I play the mpg in PowerDVD or Windows Media it lists the audio bitrate but there is no sound.

I have changed "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" to top priority and TMPG seems to accept both video and audio content.

The original avi was 700mb but the mpg was only about 570mb - is this normal for conversion of AC3 codec?

Is it possible that the sound level is too low - on 100% in WMP it still did not register any sound - is there a way to increase the volume output?

In TMPGENc, if you use the "Project Wizard" to encode, load your video and audio. In the 3rd dialog box "Filter Setting" click on "Other Settings". Another dialog box will come up called "Mpeg Setting". Select the "Audio" tab. At the bottom, you will see an option called "Audio Edit". Check the "Use Audio Edit” box and click on "Setting". From this dialog you can adjust the volume and check if the sound level is to your liking.

I have changed the Setting to 200% & 400% - there is still no audio.

I will try to change it to a lower percentage (say 20%) and see if that works

If you are not hearing any audio at 200 or 400, then there is something wrong with your audio file.

iam getting same problems, some of my Divx won't convert with sound, it must be some audio codec problem.

And with the Sound, it adds a HOLLLEE lot the space it requires, iam guessing because it keeps encoding long after the video is still encoded, the sound is still going.

I hope someone finds a fix to this.
