Sound looping with large files and TMPGenc

I have a couple of large (~2 hours each) videos I want to convert to PAL VCD format to play on a DVD player.

I ran them through tmpgenc, which appeared to do the job perfectly.

The video is fine and the sound is fine...for a while. Partway through the film (different place for each film), the sound loops the same second or so of sound repeatedly for the rest of the film. On one, for example, a second of sound from 38 minutes 12 seconds into the film is played over and over again for the next hour and a half of the film. It isn't a player issue - I have tried burning it to VCD (using Nero 6) and playing it on my DVD player, just in case. Same problem.

Any idea what went wrong, so I can avoid it happening again? I've converted a number of short bits of video with tmpgenc and without any problems.

Have you tried playing the mpeg 1 files with "Windows Media Player" or similar software based player? Does the same problem occur?

Yes. No problem before conversion, problem afterwards.
