Video or Audio quality loss when converting?

In the conversion from .VOB to .MPEG, will there be a loss in video or audio quality?

will there be a loss in quality once the converted .MPEG is turned back into .VOB files?

Re mpeg-2 - no. A VOB is a subset of the MPEG2 standard. In effect, it IS an MPEG2.

So if there is no quality loss, will i save hard drive space if I convert the files from VOB to MPEG-2 for storage? i did that with a set of VOB files and the resulting MPEGs were about 1/3 the size, but I'm not sure if they are MPEG-1 or 2. is there any way for me to now tell which one they are?

your not really going to save any space in response to your first question....you can use virtualdubmod(freeware, and not the regular virtualdub), to get info on the mpegs you create.

As an alternative to the suggestion by "columbo999", try using "GSpot" (freeware). I use this to get info with mpegs because its a bit faster that VDM on average.

1) Exactly what software and procedures did you use to "convert the .VOBs?

2) Based on the indicated size reduction, you probably converted the MPEG-2 .VOBs to MPEG-1 format...

i redid the conversion with Super DVD Ripper and I know that it converted them to MPEG-2. the resulting file is still about 1/3 the size though.

Which is it, you DON'T know if it's MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, or you DO know that it's MPEG-2?


A) Do you know whether "Super DVD Ripper" may have eliminated one or more audiostreams?

B) Do you know whether "Super DVD Ripper" may have reduce the resolution?


1) Load one of the already converted video files into VirtualDubMOD

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box
