Small sized high quality AVI

i saw a whole movie in .avi format copied on only one cd 700mb and the quality was excellent ,from the history of avi files i know it takes lot of space to have this movie in this quality,
i wonder is there a way to reduce size of the avi file while maintaining the same exact quality like this i mean real reduction like to less than 700 mb in size or so ?

if you want to leave the video exactly like it is, untouched, the best you could do is re-encode the audio at a lower bitrate, but it will suffer some quality loss, and the file size will only be reduced by a few mb.

the only way to reduce size by a decent amount is to re-encode the video, using a lower bitrate. there will always be quality loss (whether noticeable or not) when encoding using non-lossless codecs. the best you could do is use a codec that is suited to lower bitrates, such as 'x264', which looks excellent at low bitrates...
