Help me please

Hi, I'm trying to convert a file from AVI to MPEG-1 Format, and I'm using Nero burning rom. The problem I have is that each time I try to convert something, I get this message: "Unsupported File Format," and it won't let me use that file. But, I followed the instructions on the DivX digest page and it said that it would allow me to change AVI and DivX files to MPEG-1.

I would very much appreciate any help.

Which programme are you using to convert? Try TMPGEnc. It is the dogs spuds.

I've tried using TMPeng and Nero Burning Rom and both say that I have an unsupported file format.

I'm new to this stuff also but i believe the Codecs/Divx versions your using may need updating. Secondly the TMPGenc is certainly the easiest to use please take a look at the thread i earlier set up the instructions are simple and worked for me. Appologies if my views are incorrect. hope this help

In order to determine what the problem(s) may be regarding this particular .AVI, you should do the following:

1) Load the file into VirtualDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box



By the way, am I correct in presuming that you are attempting to create an MPEG1-VideoCD, for viewing on a TV via a standalone DVD player?

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'Div3' (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V3 [Hack: DivX Low-Motion])

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Also, I have already viewed this file on my computer, so shouldn't my codec work?

And yes, this is for making a VCD to view on a DVD Player.

What you've indicated is useful, but doesn't negate the possible benefit to be derived from what I suggested in my last post, so I'll repeat it:

1) Load the file into VirtualDub

The message you received from VirtualDub is indicative of the fact that the .AVI's videostream was compressed with the DivX v.3.11 codec, which you apparently don't have installed on your system. Other (UNRELATED) DivX-codecs (v.4.xx and perhaps v.5.xx) are capable of playing such files - but TMPGEnc can't convert the file unless you install the DivX v.3.11 codec. This is at least ONE reason you've been unsuccessful thusfar. When you post the information as I've suggested, I should be able to determine if there's also anything anomalous regarding the audiostream...

another problem

I've run into another problem. When I try to convert to MPEG-1, I get this message:

"An error occured when audio was decoded."

I loaded it up in VirtualDub and got this message:

"VBR Audio Stream Detected

VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce some skew.... blah blah, if it's unacceptable, decompress the entire audio system to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder."

What should I do?

That's the reason I asked you to post ALL of the information - which you never did...

That's also the reason I said there could also be something anomalous regarding the audiostream...

Be that as it may, this is how to Convert .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio:

Simply use VirtualDub to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into VirtualDub
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).

Then close VirtualDub and restart it
Set "Audio" to "No audio"
Load your silent .AVI
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Under "Audio" click on "WAV Audio" and load your .WAV
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the appropriate .MP3 settings. Click on "OK"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" and save your file with a new filename.

I guess you mean encoding to SVCD 480x480.
But first: Is it a DivX file or does it come form DVD2AVI???

In the first case:

video tab:
- interlaced
- 4:3 525 lines NTSC (but you can't choose that if you load the appropriate template)

advanced tab:
- check "clip frame" and crop to 720x468
- center custom size (480x320)
- 1:1 vga (at least if source is DivX)
- progressive (probably)

In the second case:

What is the aspect ratio? What is the framerate?

Thanks, Wilbert - your assumption is understandable but NO I did mean 720X480 SVCD from DV AVI. Mr. Setarip has written that this is possible, although he seems reluctant to share any details now. He stated you could get 35-39 min of this high resolution on an 80 min CD-r which is all I can get with standard 480X480. That just doesn't seem right so I am inquiring of setarip as to what settings he uses in TMPGEnc to accomplish this. I would think everyone would be interested in this if true. Look around post #25136.

video tab:
- interlaced
- 4:3 525 lines NTSC
- size: 720x480
- "rate control mode" 2-pass VBR (settings-->try an average bitrate of 2000)

advanced tab:
- center custom size (720x432)
- 1:1 vga
- it will autodetect whether it is interlaced
