Not in a single software. But, u can accomplish all the things done by MDR using free softwares(but multiple).
DVD Decrypter or Ripit4me for ripping
AutoGK for DVD to AVI and so on......

At the same file size XVid encoded avi will give better quality than VCD. U can burn the Xvid as Data-CD and play in ur standalone player IF UR PLAYER SUPPORTS THIS FORMAT.Most players nowadays do support DivX and XviD.

Thank you for the info. But not sure if I was understood correctly onthe first reply? I know how to rip a dvd and how to back it up to dvds. Now I want to know how to BURN the movies to a CD, in which ever format gives you the best or decent quality with out having to use "like" 4 or 5 cds. I'd like to keep it down to 1 or 2 if needed. Which programs can accomplish this for FREE and would play in any standalone player?

Not sure what you are asking, but if it is from DVD to CD here are a couple of methods I used to use at the mpeg1 level and mpeg2 level.

                      mpeg1 level (CD)
                      dvd decrypter/dgi index/tmpgenc basic/burn mpeg1 file to two CD-R disks

                      mpeg2 level (SVCD)
                      dvd decrypter/dgi index/tmpgenc plus/burn mpeg2 file to two CD-R disks

Today, dvd decrypter can be replaced with RipIt4Me or DVDFabDecrypter or PgcEdit/DVD Decrypter with the PSL-2 installer package
