Maybe this page will help you
    "http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgenc.htm#problems"

Which version of TMPGEnc do you use ?
Did you try an older version (beta 12j), see "http://www.tmpgenc.com/e_main.html" ?

I had the same issues. I got around it by using Virtua Dub to only extract the video, not audio as well. Then use something like Graph Edit to extract the audio into a wav file. TmpgEnc will let you set the new avi as the video source and the wav file at the audio source.

If TmpgEnc will not open the avi file it could be that the avi file was encoded with a different version of the DivX codec to the one you have on your PC. I suggest exctracting the video using Virtua Dub as I mentioned above. Then TmpgEnc should open it fine.

Other that that I dont have any ideas, so hopefully this may help.
