    WMP 8.0 playback

    Hi guys,
I'm running an AMD 1800+ Athlon processor with windows XP professional. Previously I was always able to watch SVCD's using WMP 8.0 that comes with XP. However, recently I was using FlaskMpeg to convert some of my DVD's into SVCD's. This was going pretty well (other than the occasional crash during encoding) until all of a sudden my WMP stopped displaying the picture of the SVCD's. It plays the sound fine, and I can use InterVideo WinDVD to watch the SVCD's as well, so it suggests that in using Flask I've done something to one of the codecs (or something) for WMP. While I know I can use InterVideo, it's just been bugging me... Can anyone help or suggest something.

Are you sure you weren't previously watching "plain vanilla" MPEG2 files? As far as I know (and, rest assured, others will eagerly correct me if my information is out of date ;>}), Windows Media Player (any version) is not capable of playing SVCDs...

I'm sure they were SVCD files because of the filesize; 250-350mb per episode (depending on the resolution I set) rather than the much larger mpeg2 files you get. Also the quality wasn't quite as good as DVD playback, there was minor pixellation when you made the picture fullscreen. When I look under file properties the file is stated as an moeg file rather than an mpeg2, as well.

You are under a misconception - SVCD files ARE MPEG2 files, with slightly modified headers...

"When I look under file properties the file is stated as an moeg file rather than an mpeg2, as well."

Strike two - The file properties of an MPEG2 file will be listed simply as "MPEG" (just as would MPEG1 files)...

I apologise if I am wrong. Despite being a veteren computer user, I'm a beginner to the world of encoding (I'm only doing it so I can show my friend some of my favourite shows).
I didn't know either of the points you make, but now I do, can you tell me if the equivelent file of a DVD quailty would be much bigger? If not I'll try to directly burn the shows onto cd's (I guess that would be one 25min episode per CDR).
Thanks very much for your expertise.
