    MPEG-1 playback

Which codec is needed to playback MPEG-1 in WMP?
Audio is very choppy and distorted.
Tried other players such as BSPlayer and PowerDVD.
Video and Audio is normal when opened in VDub.

Actually, you don't need any codecs to view mpeg-1's in WMP, but I can suggest that you get an mpeg-2 codec for your WMP just to make sure it view's your mpeg-2's properly in the future, and it might just help the viewing of mpeg-1's.

Also, which version of MP are you using?
Did you know you can SEARCH the forum? Fixes common problems too:

Is this mpeg-1 playback problem a recent occurence? If so, what if any system (hardware/software) changes have you made?

If you haven't already done so, you might try installing and using good old reliable version 6.4 of Windows Media Player (From your desktop: Start>>Run - Type MPLAYER2.EXE)

Perhaps I've got so many different codecs that the system is about to crash.
But I think it's strange that the mpeg's plays perfectly in VDub
Maybe it's time for some format c:.......

          I'm using WMP 6.4

Is this a problem that has developed recently??

I've been having the same problem and after a format and reinstall exactly the same started to happen again.

When i playback in WMP 6.4 or 9 (it seems the version is irrelevent) i get the video freeze, then the audio about 10-30 sec later, then the video speeds up to catch up with the audio.

If i play the same file in PowerDVD it plays fine.

The problem is very random (some times i can watch 30min or more before problems start, other times it only takes a few seconds before the trouble starts)

Is this the same type of thing your experiencing??

Someone mentions hardware earlier on. I've changed my CPU (now a Athlon XP 2000+ from Althon 1.4Ghz) and changed my graphics card (from a old Geforce2 GTS Ultra to a MSI Geforce4 4800). Could this have anything to do with it?? I thought MPEG1 was playback using software??

Sorry to have kinda butted in on your topic but it seemed the most relevent post to join in on (as they seems to be loads of post regarding back mpeg playback - didn't really wanna start another). If anyone got anything i can try to sort this problem plz let me know. cheers

oh, am running XP Pro too if that makes any difference.
