video dies after a point

I got this video, now it plays upto a certain time, then the video goes blank and there is a constant cd read (or a harddisk read if i play it off the hard disk). Even if i try to forward, it works only upto that particular time, any time later, will just lead to a black blank screen.
Trying to load the video onto VirtualDub shows a Packet Sync error.
Isn't there some software which can detect and remove those non-working packets so that i can get most of the movie back ?

Where exactly did you get the video, and what format is the video in?

the video is on a VCD in the VCD (.dat) format.
