How to fix vcds with "jerky" playback?

I have quite a few VCDs that has this 'jerky' playback problem -- that is during playback, blocks will appear at some locations for 1 or 2 seconds. Viewing some of these VCDs on a computer may even cause windows media player (6.4 or 7) to crash. I tried to reencode the whole video using TMPGenc but the video causes the program to crash (However the video doesn't crash during TMPEGenc preview playback). Is there any way to fix this 'jerky' video problem?

You may find help at vcdhelp.com. Post some information about your system. If it is an old computer, try reducing colour to 16 bit or desktop area to 640x480.
