.dat format not supported by Media Player

    Hi all,

I can play the .dat file of my self-made VCD on my Win98 PC with the standard MS Media Player.

When I put this VCD into my Win2000 PC , it says that the format is not supported. While the version of the MEdia Player on the Win 2000 PC is newer! I have tried the CD-ROM player and the CD-Rewriter. Both cannot play.

What is wrong? A Win 2000 bug?

try updating to a later version of media player. Supprisingly, the greedy nerd named Bill Gates won't charge for the upgrade.

Actually, if you install the OLDER v.6.4 of Windows Media Player, you should be a happy camper...

          Have you checked this?

I had a problem with WMP7.0 not recognizing .dat extensions - my problem was in the Windows/System/Iosubsys folder - the file scsihlp1.vxd had it's extension changed to .vxx. I renamed, rebooted and it now recognizes the .dat extension. Drove me crazy!!

All you really have to do is to highlight the three letter DAT and change them to MPG. Then open the media player,a nd it will play just fine...
