Divx ????
How can one tell if the avi file is a regular avi file or a Divx avi file?? And what is the easiest way to convert an avi ( Divx or not ) into a VCD???

For the first question, open the file in WMP 6.4, go to:
File -> Properties -> Advanced
If DivX Decoder Filter appears in the list, then you're playing a divx file.
For the second question, use TMPGenc, which can be downloaded in the Software section -
u can also use virtualdub to check if it's a DIVX file.
open virtualdub
open video
goto file > file information
and it will tell you in the video compresser section

I already have TMPGEnc, and have used this twice to convert an avi. But, after following the same procedures as with the first two, I am only getting a black screen with sound. With the first two, I could see the video as it was being changed in TMPGEnc. I can play the other files fine in windows media player or Power DVD ( both are avi files ) but when I try to convert, I get a black screen with sound.. Any suggestions?????

Uninstall the DIVX v5 codec, install DIVX v4.xx codecafter following the same procedures as with the first two, I am only getting a black screen with sound.
then start encoding in TMPGEnc
DIVX v5 is not compatible with TMPGEnc...have you tried the latest versions of TMPGEnc?

My current version of 2.53 is compatible with DivX 5, so it makes sense that the latest version of 2.57 is as well.

I am using tmpgenc verson 2.54.37.135. I have divx 5 instaslled. any suggestions how I can get the avi files into vcd files??

Download the newest version of TMPG and try after that... if it doesn't work uninstall DivX 5xx.

Got it ifgured out.....
Ok. Ive figured it out. I used a program called AVI2MPEG. Theres two exe 's in the program. I used the first one
( Decompress.exe ) but not the second one. Instead, I used TMPGEnc. Worked great and the vcd's look great..
