    DVD ripping speed?

I have a 12x creative dvd player and it seems like when I rip a dvd it's taking longer than it should be.

I use smart ripper and it usually shows the dvd speed at 1x.

Is this normal? Is there a way to increase the speed?

Check that DMA is turned on for your device, in case you haven't.

and if perchance your motherboard uses a VIA chipset

viaarena.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, viaarena.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

Download those drivers, they helped DMA for me a lot, and if it doesn't , updated drivers can't hurt

Yep all is enabled that needs to be enabled. I keep a very tweaked and updated win2k install.

I was just unsure if there was some setting in smart ripper that I was missing or if there was another program that some how increased the dvd speed.

          Would installing ASPI help?

My experience in the past with it was that it caused my system to be unstable, especially with cd burning programs.

As long as you can uninstall the ASPI layer, you should be fine. In case its installation does cause system instability, you can just uninstall it.

Give DVD Decryptor a try and see whether your rip speed improve.
