    DIVX Encoding on P4...

    I posted last week about getting shitty fps from Flask 0.6 from P4 compared to Athlon/ Duron (scaled with relative performance/ clock frequency). I knew something was wrong.

    The answer was to used Xmpeg 4.5. There P4 performs very similarly to Althon of the same PR.

    Xmpeg RGB -> Athlon 1600+ gives ~16fps and P4 2 GHz Northwood (845 PE board) gives ~20 fps. (Athlon is using Fast MMX idct and P4 uses Fast SEE2 idct as recommended by the program).

    Xmpeg YUV -> 2 GHz P4 gives ~27 fps.

    So, apparently Flask 0.6 is just too old and is not optimized for P4 even though it has SSE2 idct.

    Thanks for your help and PARTY ON!

    You should get a simmilar improvement if you use yuv mode in xmpeg with the athlon
    Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

      I tried it on a 1 GHz Duron (with DDR) and got a jump from 13 fps (RGB) to 17 fps (YUV).

          Why should he buy another mainboard and the required accompanying CPUs just for that? That would incur extra unnecessary costs.

          Actually dual CPUs will not necessarily provide that much speed improvement in video encoding. It will be useful for server purposes, yes, but NOT video encoding (where the most you can ever hope to gain over a single processor machine is around 50% or less).
