How to convert Divx 4.12 AVI file into MPEG2 SVCD?

Hi All,

I've been creating VCDs for wuite some time now using Premiere/Panasonic MPEG1/Nero with a lot of success. I recently discovered that my old DVD player will also play SVCDs, so I've been trying several methods of doing this.

I use Premiere to capture and edit my mini DV tapes, using a pinnacle DV200 capture card.

If I use Microsoft MPEG4 V2 codec to create a temporary output file, I can then use TMPGEnc V2.02 to read that file and create a MPEG2 file, and burn that to SVCD using Nero, it works well. The only problem is that the quality of the MS MPEG4 V2 codec leaves something to be desired.

So, I installed the Divs 3.11 and 4.12 codecs into premiere. The 3.11 codecs seem to be limited to a data rate of 910kps which is too low. I used the 4.12 codecs, and this produced an excellent quality output file, it's a great codec!

The only problem is that I can't get TPMGEnc to read the file. It justs says that "The file cant open, or unsupported". It reads files generated with the 3.11 codec just fine, just not the 4.12 codec.

I am using TPMGEnc V2.02, and have installed the VFAPI plugin, but don't know if I need to configure it.

Also, I read on the DIVX-DIGEST site that TMPG 2.5 has been released, but there is no mention of it on the TMPGEnc website. ANyone know when it will be available? Failing that, can anyone tell me how to get TMPGEnv V2.02 to read a Divx 4.12 AVI File?

You are under a misconception. The 910 bitrate is merely the default setting of the 3.11 codec. When you select that codec (under whatever program you're using), click on the "Configure" radio button and simply move the slider to whatever bitrate you desire. Be advised that .AVI files created with the 3.11 codec are totally compatible with ALL versions of TMPGEnc. (Haven't heard of a v.2.5 yet)

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did change the bitrate, and exited the dialog box, but if I re-enter the dialog box, it is set back to 910kps again! This is why I assumed that the slider for the bitrate was actually inactive. I'll try it out with a few clips and see how it goes.

Thanks for the tip, any clues on how to get TMPGEnc to read the Divx 4.12 AVI file?

Hi Just did a quick test. I exported a 30 second clip from Premire using the DIVX Fast motion codec, once using the default setting od 910kps, and then again at 6000kps. Both files ended up at 8Mb. So it would appear, that within Premire at least, the Divx fast motion and low motion codecs are fixed at 910kps.

Hi all,

I just found TMPGEnc V2.5 I had been looking at www.tmpgenc.com which hadn't been updated. V2.5 can be downloaded from www.tmpgenc.net (not .com), and it recognises AVI files that have been encoded using the Divx 4.12 codec

Are you simply EXITING, or do you click on "Okay" (as you should, if you want the settings to take effect)?

Forgive my paraphrasing. There are only two buttons on the dialog box, OK and Cancel. I was pressing the OK button, obviously.

Anyways, it's all fixed now. The TMPGEnc V2.5 encoder is the works!

Do you know if the new version of tmpg will support XP OS. It didn't specify win XP as a platform it would work on. Has anyone tried it? thanks
