    virtual dub error

i captured video using adobe premier into an avi, and now i want to compress it into divx using virtual dub but i get the following error:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs such as those by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

is there a known solution to this,
ive seen some posibilities by doing google searches but couldnt get any to work.

    thanks for any help

You are lacking the "codec". TSUNAMI codec pack (full) has a lot of digital video codecs, you might want to take a look at it. Or you could try locating "dvsd" through a google search and install this codec.

As I previously posted in response to the same question (different poster:

A Google search discloses that one version of this codec is available for download from:

(Since this is the publisher's site, and it's indicated that it places a watermark on the files, I assume that this is a legitimate "freebie" and NOT warez)

Additionally, an unrestricted version should be available in the following "codec pack" Tsunami FilterPack 3.9.6

      Let us know of your success ;>}

        ok, i downloaded that.

        i got a different error

about the video and audio being on same stream and virtual dub not being able to seperate them.

so i got the video there but no sound

I've got to believe that this can only be a consequence of your capture setup in Premiere (with which I am not personally familiar).

I'm curious - when you originally captured the .AVI (BEFORE you installed the DVSD codec), did it play back with audio?

I dont remember specifically installing a dvsd codec. I think thats the default when capturing using firewire with premier and windows movie maker.

anyway, I deleted all my premier captures, so the avi i got this new error on was captured using windows movie maker.
and the avi would play audio and video, but the file is huge so i wanted to use virtualdub to compress it.

i couldnt open it in virtual dub until i installled the suggested mainconcept codec you posted. Now I can get the video in virtual dub but no audio.

Ill try and post the exact error.

            thanks for your help
