    problems with 2 pass encoding

I've been trying to encode a movie with Divx 5.0 Pro with gnot but after running for a while my computer crashes.

I tried 2 pass encoding using vidome with Divx 5.0 Pro with virtually the same result... actually just the program crashes after a while with that one.

I've encoded 1 pass in the past using a guide to do it manually though virtual dup with no problem but I would like to do a 2 pass encoding with gnot.

    Any suggestions??

If you get random crashes, it's almost cirtainly caused by system instability (it's not unusual for this to only showup durring divx compression).

Make sure you got the latest bios and drivers for your motherboard and graphics card. And make sure that the system is properly cooled.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

Also make sure that if you're overclocking your CPU or RAM or both that you can run Prime95 stably - if not, then that's the problem (your cpu/ram is unstable from overclocking).

What is prime95 stability? I would like to check this out. And how do make the CPU/RAM more 'stable' from overclocking?

Also, I'm currently encoding 2 pass with Divx 3 and it's doing fine so far. It's gotten much farthur than it did with divx 5

Prime95 is a burn in program. It uses 100% of you CPU making math operations. If you cant run that for a while you have an unstable computers. Maybe you need a larger CPU fan/heatsink or underclock some.

            Thanks,

Just for further note, since I last posted I've tried the following:

I tried 2 pass encoding with several applications... actually any doing two pass with any guide I could find off of this website. So that includes Div 5.0 with G-not wich crashed close to the end of the first pass, Div 3.0 with G-not wich worked fine (but that's not what I wanted, Div 5.0 and xvid with Vidome which crashed close to the end of the first pass, and Div 5.0 and xvid with Flaskmpeg which both crashed close to the end of the first pass.

After going through all of the stuff above I had learned enough about encoding do a 2 pass encoding on Virtual Dub (the program that worked to encode Divx 5.0 with 1 pass) and I used xvid since I liked the way it sets up better the divx 5.0 and it worked. Used all my resources all the way through but it got it done. I ran it again just to make sure it wasn't a fluke, but it worked again.

I would like to be able to use the other programs, and in particular Flaskmpeg (I noticed some add ons that I could make use of) but until I can figure out why the other programs crash, I'll stick with virtual dub.

            Thanks
