converting big mpeg files into smaller divx format

    Hi Guru's,

I have a Sony 743 Camcorder, it uses a software called Pixela to capture movies from the tape into MPG format, I am created few clips using it, but my problem is that a 15 minutes clips will be sized to about 400mb in mpg file format, so if I have a 45 minutes then I need more than 3 cd's per tape.

One of my friends told me that Divx is the solution, and I can compress a 2 hours movie in to one cd, my question is how to do that and what software should i use to convert my mpeg vids into a smaller files without loosing the quality, appreciate if someone can guide me to an encoder to change the mpg to divx format.

    Thanks in advance.

    Try the following method:
    1. Open MPG file in VD.
    2. Set Video and Audio tabs to Full Processing Mode.
    3. Under Video, select Compression and choose the DivX codec. Configure the settings, as required.
    4. Under Audio, select Compression and select a codec (eg. MP3). Choose a desired bitrate (eg. 128kbps).
    5. If the source resolution is not divisible by 16, you will need to resize it to conform to the factor-of-16 requirement. Use the Resize filter with Precise Bicubic mode.
    6. Go to File -> Save as AVI and give a name to the new file.

I'm sure enchanter was referring to VirtualDub, which can be obtained at:

mpeg to divx avi format is solved

          Thanks Setarip,

yes it is Vertual Dub , but I have solved the problem without using it, actually I was having the solution between my hands , but there was some missunderstanding, let me explain it as this might help some Sony camcorder users :-

The winmpg video converter is a simple fancy easy to use application that can do the conversion, I have tried it with some mpg clips that I have created and saved on the sony memory stick which after conversion there was only some kilobytes different, which I found impractical, but when I tried with huge files of size 450mb for about 16 minutes recording, the result was remarkable, as the resulted AVI file was only about 90mb wooow.

That was the acheivement that I was looking for, thanks again to you and enchanter to give me your valuable time that inspires me to find the solution that I was looking for.

          Thanks again
