Can't find Xvid codec in Virtualdub

Im trying to encode using the Xvid codec with VirtualDub. When I go to the 'select video compression' option the Xvid codec does not show up. I understand that it is meant to show up as 'Xvid MPEG-4 Video Codec' but no sign of it.

I have installed the ffdshow-20020923, thus allowing me to watch all Xvid encoded movies etc.

I have also installed kopei's lastest binary version of the Xvid codec.

I am just wondering if I have installed the codec wrong, i just used the setup package i downloaded and done nothing else.

Im currently using VirtualDub 1.4.10 and Kopei's XviD-04102002-1,
though i have tried many.

Any ideas please!

Koepi's latest build has some bugs, revert to a prior more "stable" version or utilize a stable build of the codec.

thanks for replying.

i've treid many codecs from Kopei as well as from Nic's Xvid binaries and uManiac's. with it still not appearing in VirtualDub.

please bear with me i am a newbie, what do you mean by 'utilize'
do i have to do anything special after i have downloaded the codec. All i have done is doubled clicked on the download and followed the instructions, it is all pretty automated.

Have you tried upgrading to the more recent Virtualdub 1.4.13 (or even VirtualDubMod 1.4.13.1)?

yes i've tried 1.4.13, virtualdubmod 1.4.13.1 as well as earlier versions1.4.7

all other codecs(such as divx slow/fast (div3/div4) etc ) show up except the xvid codec.

I have just tried to re-install all my codec's, now virtual dub will not see div3, div4, windows media v2 or windows media v3.

what am i doing wrong??

Perhaps you should try installing the codecs via a codec pack, such as Tsunami, and reinstall DirectX (if necessary).

hear is what i did:
uninstalled all video codecs.
installed divx low and fast
installed divx 5 and the play back filter
installed microsoft mpeg-4 and the play back filter
installed xvid mpeg-4 and the play back filter
(all via tsunami filter pack 3 9 6)

then istalled directx

still there is only the basic codecs showing up in virtualdub

Have you tried rebooting (cold)?

Try this, I think it will help

You can download the latest XVID binaries from this site. http://nic.dnsalias.com/ look for the link to the left of the page.

All you need to do is install the codec and virtualdub will no longer give you the error. I have just managed to extract the .wav, and am in the process of converting now.
I hope that this is of help to you.

Check at Windows Multimedia panel...

All sucessfully codec installation should be registered and can be looked at Multimedia Control Panel -> at Devices section.

If it doesn't show the installed codec, then the codec installation was unsucessfully.

Virtual Dub and any other encoder software just used all codecs that listed on Multimedia Video Compressor device only.

Im not sure what windows operating system you have, im on xp professional. to see the installed codecs i go to device manager then click on video codecs, correct me if im wrong .

I've included a picture of the vidoe codecs device manager says i have. there seems to be alot of them, maybe this is part of the problem.

Your Compression Codecs were mixed up...

Well, after I saw your video codecs list, I think your Audio Compression codecs were mixed up with your Video Compression codecs. Cause at My PC with Windows XP installed, my Video Compression Codecs list were Video only ! There supposed to be no mciwave, wave sound driver, and any audio codecs.

You can remove your audio codecs from your video codecs list. BTW check your Audio Codecs too.

I think this could help to solve your problems.
