virtualdub question

Ok, I recently got XP (I never liked how everything is too automated). If I record stuff wrong now with my TV card (lose frames and stuff) windows media player plays it fine, but with anything else, the sound and picture don't match up. Because of that, I can't convert it to divx.

I tried the Windows Movie Maker, and managed to convert it to asf format. Now to turn it into divx, I want to use virtualdub. I got the version that does this (from this site) and the codec, also from the instructions in this site. This is the error msg I get when I try to open the file:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'WMV1' (unknown)

anyone know what's wrong?

What is the format of your ORIGINAL captured file (BEFORE converting to .ASF)?

Yes, it matters...

Use TMPGEnc as follows:

TMPGEnc>>MPEGTools>>Merge&Cut
Load your file
Set mode to the PROPER MPEG format (MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 - you didn't fully identify which)
Save with a new filename

Use the new file for conversion to DivX-compressed .AVI applying the procedures you normally use for this task (By the way, what software do you "usually" use to convert the files to DivX-compressed .AVIs?)

Ah, my bad. the original file was mpeg-1.

I usually use virtualdub, but I am usually able to tell before I record (the original file) if it came out wrong. Windows Media Player played it fine so I didn't realize that the the file was messed up until i opened it up with virtual dub. It's weird though, because the asf file works fine even after the compression.

So are you saying that the MPEG file itself can be fixed?

I'm suggesting that, if you follow the procedures I've outlined, you MAY be able to fix the original MPEG-1 file.

If the TMPGEnc method doesn't work, you might also try the following procedure, using VirtualDub (since it's an MPEG-1 file):

Load the file into VirtualDub
Set BOTH "Audio" and "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Framerate - and select "Make video and audio durations match"
Save with a new filename with a .AVI extender

hmm...

i tried TMPGEnc but it just saved it way out of sync. Also, the virtualdub method didn't work.

The weird thing is, Windows Media must have some sort of other decoding device or something because it can play the original mpg file correctly. If i resave it, even into the same format, the file gets out of sync.

I used a Windows movie editing program to compress it, and it works fine. However it's not in divx, and i want to compress it further.

I'm pretty sure that if i can get virtual dub to be able to read asf files, i'll be ok. so what does this error message mean?

WMV1 is the Windows media V.7 video codec...

VirtualDub uses VFW codecs.
Microsoft does not have a VFW codec for WMV1 only DirectShow codecs which is used by WMP.

Try doing what setarip said.
But set both Video & Audio to Full Processing and choose you compression codecs and such.
