BIG problems with converting VCD to DivX

Dear Gods and Demigods of Digital Video!

Please help me! I got many VCD which I need to convert urgently to DivX. These VCDs are in real bad condition, lots of scratches, etc.
    Here's what I do:
    1. Either copy .dat file to my computer and then use VCDGear to convert it to .mpg, OR

    2. If it is impossible to copy .dat file to my computer, I just use VCDGear to convert .dat file from the laser disk to .mpg on my HD.

    Then:
    1. .mpg file would not load into Virtual Dub (Cannot find video packet, audio synchronization problems, etc. etc.)
    2. Attempts to use AudioSynch result in a videofile with no audio at all.
    3. GraphEdit extracts audio but the resulting .wav file is 31 minutes while the .mpg is 54 min!
    4. FlaskMPEG starts to encode .mpg file just fine, then in several minutes the picture freezes, and sound stops although Flask shows that it continues to count frames!

The interesting fact is that this god-damn .mpg file plays just fine in MS Media Player or WinDVD.

Please tell me what to do with these stubborn .mpg file? Are there any techniques/programs that can help me? Since this .mpg file plays in MS Media Player, I am sure THERE MUST BE A WAY to record it in any good format that later can be encoded into DivX.

    Thank you,

Try re-saving the file using TMPGEnc as follows:

    TMPGEnc>>File>>MPEGTools>>Merge&Cut

    Load your file
Set mode to "plain vanilla" MPEG-1" (NOT "MPEG-1VideoCD)
    Save with a new filename

    Let us know of your success ;>}

      Update on my misfortunes

      THanks to everyone for replies.
TMPGEnc did not help either. It says something like MPEG error or something. I tried all modes to no avail.

Can anyone explain to me why attempts to produce .avi in VirtualDub through .avs (AviSynch) result in a videofile with no audio?

I think I will just encode video part of the movie and then play .mpg file in Media Player and record the sound from my soundcard using some program.

      Thanks,

"It says something like MPEG error or something."

A little more effort on your part, such as "bothering" to type the EXACT error message, might result in some meaningful assistance...

Dear Setarip, Emperor of Digital Video,

TMPEng says "MPEG Import Filter Error: video pack synchronization error". This error occurs immediately, as soon as I try to load .mpg file into the program.

Is there anything I can do?

          Thank you,

Do you have the REQUIRED TMPGEnc companion VFAPI file installed?

              where should it be located?

Could you please tell me where this file should be located. I am writing from the office, I come back home and try to find it.

              Thanks,

Depending on which version of TMPGEnc you're using, it's either a separate download .zip from the same site that you downloaded TMPGEnc, or it's included in the TMPGEnc download .zip. In both instances, in addition to downloading the VFAPI file, you have to follow the instructions for INSTALLING it...

(So does your location mean you are a Bolshevik? ;>})

I am a Communist what wants to go hi-tech...

                  Dear Emperor,

I got the latest version of TMPEng (59).

I will keep you posted regarding my progress, if you do no mind. You are my only hope.

                    That would be my pleasure ;>}

But have no fear - there are others that post to this forum who may also provide assistance and/or additional insight...
