    AVI to MPEG

Hey guys I am new to this and just made my first successful rip and encode last night and I have a couple questions

    1. Would I be better to convert my AVI files to MPEG4?
    2. If so what program should I use for conversion?
    3. Would it make my file and smaller?
    4. Pro's and Con's about AVI and MPEG

    Thanks guys

"1. Would I be better to convert my AVI files to MPEG4?"

What exactly did you encode to in the first place?

"2. If so what program should I use for conversion?"

    VirtualDub/NanDub

"3. Would it make my file and smaller?"

    Compared to what?

well asked questions, u are learning

usually, it is not best to convert AVI straight to MPEG 4 (DIVX) this is my personal opinion as it shows alot of macroblocks or artifacts,

the way I do it, and that people like to do (reading from me) is to convert it to MPEG 2 (using TMPGEnc) and then using a 2 pass encoding method in nandub to convert it to MPEG 4 (DIVX), or you can use vidomi to convert it to DIVX

take a look at some of my guides, even tho u may not have captured the material from some source (like from TV/video) read the guide I have made on capturing, it gives some hints on converting AVI to DIVX, take a look.

But hey, this is only my opinion, works for myself, and some others as I have heard, but may not neccessarily work for yourself, or it might. who knows, until you try and experiment, that's the key to learn
