fixing bad audio

I'm using Nicky's normalisation methode for some time now and up until now it worked fine.

I have the following problem:
I'm not able to extract the sound out of the avi.

1. When i :
open the avi
save Wav.....................a .wav file will show up, but when i try to convert it into a pcm wave with Winamp i get this window



2. When i:
open the avi
select "audio" ---> full processing mode ---> no compression
save wav .................i will get this window



So i concluded that it must be because of the audio codec in the movie and voila




But now i would like to know how to handle this ac3 (btw the codec is installed, because i can watch and listen to the movie)

My aim is to get rid of the 48.000Hz sampling and if possible (but secundairy) to increase the volume a little)
I want to convert it to mpg to burn it as a vcd.

Any suggestions would be very helpfull, because all i read about extracting and ac3 concerned vob files

Go to the following site to download the .AC3-modified version of VirtualDub:

Load the .AVI file into VDUB1.4C-AC3, setting "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying" and select (under "File") "Save .WAV/.AC3" - and save as .AC3 (IMPERATIVE to save as .AC3! - .WAV does NOT save properly). After this is done, for safety's sake, change the "Audio" setting to "No Audio" and save the video portion as a silent .AVI.

You will then have extracted the .AC3 audio stream from the .AVI.
You can then load the .AC3 file into a converter such as the PX3converter and convert it to a .WAV file (and, if you wish, have it perform your desired normalization).

Then, using the "normal" VirtualDub, load the silent .AVI. Change the "Video" setting to "Direct Stream Copying". Then select ".WAV Audio" from the "Audio" dropdown and load your .WAV file. Save with a new file name.

setarip, you can't even begin to imagine what a life-saver you are
(although you took your time to reply )

I searched for a filter for VD, but didn't think of a modified version (like the freezing frames checker -i could have guessed)

I also found (desperately as i had become) some proggies and even downloaded a few, but luckely for me you saved me

Thanks again, glad to have found a place where i can turn to in case of an emergency

I wasn't in the opportunity to try out your methode earlier (you know ....work ...work ...work)
But today i did

I successfully extracted the ac3 with the modified version of VDub
Then i converted it to wav with Azid (pain in the a** - it takes a long time and i end up with a 600Mb wav file -so any suggestions for a better prog would be appreciated)
Then i made a pcm wav outof it with winamp

I then loaded the avi and the wav file into the normal Virt. Dub
converted it to 44.100Hz and compressed it to Mp3 128 Kb)

The avi i end up with is only 3 Mb larger then the original; and it works beautiful
so now i will load it into TMPGEn to make it a mpg and burn it to vcd

Once again, for conversion of .AC3 to .WAV, I'd suggest PX Converter.
