XviD encoding with AC3 sound

Hi Guys,

I managed to download the famous James Bond film XiD with the ac3, and i am now interested in creating my own XviD's with ac3 sound rather than the standard 2 speakers....(please forgive me if i assume the worng thing, but i a somewhat a newbie to this area).

Now i have tried a number of methods to try and get this to work, including downloading all the XviD encoders and oher programs that i can lay my hand on. I have been most succesful with the new version of Flask... but although i am able to get the XviD video encoding to work, i keep on getting 2 channel sound rather than ac3.

I have tried following the advise given on doom9, but since the guide there is a little old, the settings in the software that it suggests are not the same and i know somewere i am probably making the mistake, but can not for the likes of me figure out were.

Can someone please give me a few pointers as to what i need to be doing and how, and any software that i might be missing.

Again it is a XviD copy of my dvd's that i want but with ac3 sound rather then the usual 2 channel.

Extract the appropriate AC3 sound track using DVD2AVI and mux it with the AVI you have created using nandub.

So u mean create the XviD with no sound, then extract the ac3 from the dvd and mux (which i am new to but i suppose mean fuse) the ac3 with the XviD using the software u mentioned.

For sync purposes would you recommend any video extraction software, or would for example FlaskMpeg with the XviD encoder plug in be sufficient.

Second Question: Until now to allow me to store the DVDs that i have had on my hard drive in easily movable chunks i have been ripping the vob files in 1gb files. is there any significant difference in the encoding of these files as apposed to the encoding of one large vob file which is the whole movie with respect to the muxing of the ac3 and the video??

Use the following interleaving values for AC3 sound streams:
448kbps (6 ch) -> Preload: 128ms, Interleave: 128ms
384kbps (6 ch) -> Preload: 160ms, Interleave: 160ms
256kbps (2 ch) -> Preload: 48ms , Interleave: 48ms
224kbps (2 ch) -> Preload: 64ms , Interleave: 64ms

If you happen to be using the relatively old FAT/FAT32 file system, you will be limited to having a maximum filesize of 2 GB or more (Can't remember the exact figure), hence necessitating splitting the VOB files into chunks.

and the files that i have are already split into 1gb chunks not because of FAT, im running Win XP with NTFS, but i have decided to make them into 1gb files as it makes the film easier to move. However my question is that since the movie has been split up. Already, would that make any difference in the ac3 or XviD encoding process as apposed to one large vob file. Or is the process essentially the same.

I would not touch Flask even with a 10 feet pole.

I would definitely recommend the Avisynth + VirtualDub (or VDMod) combination for XviD (and DivX) conversions. GordianKnot will help greatly in the automated creation of the required Avisynth Script (AVS) file.

No difference IMHO. The splitting of files into chunks is basically as I outlined above.

have looked at the programs u recommended and i must say that there are two many variable and options and it is all very confusing.

Is there any other program that i can use to create the desired effect, good quility XviD with AC3 sound for the time being, until i have fully learned, or tried to anyway, the way to get it done with the programs mentioned.

Alternatively is there a quick guide that i can follow that will give me the basics and then i can build my knowledge from there.

Sure.

There is a program called GordianKnot, which comes highly recommended. UncasMS, a moderator of this forum, has prepared an excellent guide on using it and is available from within the forum. I suggest you give his guide a read and try out GordianKnot.

To get a bit more technical here, GordianKnot makes use of a number of different programs to achieve the DVD to AVI conversion (the whole process is automated, making it very easy-to-use for even beginners, esp. when a guide on using it is being followed). GordianKnot creates an Avisynth Script (AVS) file, which is basically a renamed-to-AVS TXT file, containing a list of command lines. The said script file is loaded into Virtualdub and the appropriate codec is configured, followed finally by the conversion process itself.

There is a recent thread titled, "We Need A Better Guide" (or something like that), in which I gave a little guide on how to manually create your own AVS script. It may come in useful if you want to understand about AVS script file creation better.

Well i managed to get teh audio and the video files and have checked them to be fine on their own, and when i have used VirtuaDub to interleave the ac3 and the XviD the result is fine, apart from one problem.

When the file is playeed from start to finish there are no sound synch problems, however when the slider is moved either back or forth, the sync goes straight out of the windows. And i dont mean just by a few seconds, but rather if it was playing in the begginig fo the file and i slided the movie towards the end, i would still have audio from the beggining of the file being played back.

I have tried this with a few XviD playback soft's, like PowerDVD, BSplyaer, Vidomi...etc

I also tried to combine the audio nad video twice and the result was the same.

Any ideas on what is happening or what i am doing wrong??

Is the cpu load high when fastforwarding/rewinding? If so, consider lowering any post processing settings.

Alternatively, consider using the FFDSHOW playback filter for xvid playback.

thank for the quick reply batman, but i dont have a problem with playback of any other DVD's, DVD ripps or DivX/XviD files on that machine, and it is not that badly spec'd, P3 800, 384MB ram 20GB Hd decent GFX card...

any other suggections??
