Mr. Frustrated! Pls. help with audio video sync

I'm using Dvdx 2.1 and the movie I'm encoding doesn't come up in sync with the audio. I'm trying to encode in mpeg 1 format and usually a chapter will be in sync but when I attempt to encode the entire film it sometimes will be out of audio video sync by 1 second. Can you help?
