DivX 5.03 Playback stuttering (not with MS MPEG4)

Hi everyone. I have the strangest problem that I can't seem to fix. I'm encoding a DVD (tried 3 different ones, same problem) with DivX 5.03 and Flask 0.6 (also tried DVDx). When I try to play back the resulting AVI (I only let it encode a minute since the problem is there already), the image stutters without any reason. Like if its a paramount movie, the stars going around the mountain, the image gets stuck for a second, then playback goes on, then it keeps stuttering for a couple of frames every 2 seconds or so, making the video unwatchable. I checked my CPU utilization and it never goes above 25% on an AthlonXP 1700 during playback. And the weirdest thing is that this problem goes away as soon as I change over to the MS MPEG4 codec.

I would like to encode with DivX 5.03 because of the quality/file size advantage. Any help you offer would be greatly appreciated.

You have both Divx 5.03 and 5.02 installed?

I have had the same problem when I have chosen too high a resolution. I try to stay under 600x...

I have also seen the same problem using MS Media Player instead of DivX Player. Also this could happen if you set the DivX Player Options to Maximum Quality. Try setting it to Minimum.

This is particularly true on slower machines (less than 500mhz).
