    is there anyway to convert VBR audio to avi audio W/O nandub?

    I have had trouble with converting vbr audio with nandub. Here are my steps.

    1) load the file in nandub
    2) set video to direct stream copy
    3) set audio to full processing mode
    4) audio-->compression

    Here is where it gets frustrating . it always comes up with an error saying "ok, you've managed to crash virtualdub"...

    So i can't get to the "uncompressed PCM" setting. it should already be set. Maybe...

    5) file-->save wav
    6) restart nandub and load the avi
    7) audio-->wav audio, and select the saved wav
    8) i see if it is synch.

    it is not synch, but it only plays for 1 second and stops, every time i move the slider.

    and I can't go any farther because it isn't synch...

    Try extracting the audio out as MP3 (ie. Set Audio tab to DIrect Stream Copy, followed by Save WAV...). Input the MP3 file into MAD Frontend program. This is basically an MP3 decoder (that utilises the more accurate MPEG Audio Decoder), capable of outputting a number of formats, including WAV.

    Once done, input the resulting WAV file into nandub and continue with what you planned to do.

      And how exactly would I get an MP3 audio if I save it as WAV
      I can only save it as wav and if I change the filename, it doesn't work...

          my intentions are to make a SVCD in TMPGEnc and so I can play it on my DVD player. Maybe I will write a suggestion letter to TMPGEnc and tell them to make VBR audio compatible.

            Here's how you go about it:
            1. Open AVI in nandub
            2. Set Audio tab to Direct Stream Copy
            3. Go to File and Save WAV... Give a name to the new file. The file will be an MP3 file, albeit with a WAV header.

            Now you can input that MP3 file into the program and go on from there on your own.

              ok, the mp3 thing didn't work out for my computer. What I did do is ignore vdub's vbr message and made a wav. And it is synch. I have both audio and video on direct stream copy, but the file for this 35 minute clip is 675MB!!! it doesn't seem right to me...
              After all, i want to make a SVCD and that may be too big for it.

                  Use nandub. I doubt direct streaming can crash the program . . .

                      You might want to try re-installing your mp3 codecs.

                            ok. After about a week of trying to solve this problem, still no luck!!! I can't believe that it worked for the first part and not the second part!!! I made a silent video file and and uncompressed wav file vith vdub. I load them into vdub and it is sync until the 8000 something frame. It comes up with and error, you can see it in the attachment. after that, it comes up with more of these at various places. sometimes it gets closer, but not nearly close enough, other times it gets way off.
                            I feel sorry for my keyboard because I have been typing on the keys so hard!

                              Do you think that it would work if I extract the audio from the original file and put it back together and cut the second half from there?
