Audio off-sync

I have a video that seems to be encoded with div3 and its audio is off-sync. its off 1 second just about everywhere.

i dont know much about encoding/decoding (close to nothing), but is there a way to fix it, like decoding it and setting the sound layer one second later and recoding it (i have no clue if this is possible, im just guessing)?

A) If the difference between audio and video is constant throughout the video:

Load the file into VirtualDub, VirtualDubMod, or NanDub.
Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy".
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Interleaving"
Under "Audio skew correction", set an appropriate number of milleseconds (positive or negative) in the box labelled "Delay audio track by"
Save with a new filename

B) If the difference increases as the movie plays:

From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select framerate - and select "Change so video and audio durations match"

im saving now, but i have the feeling i lost sound completely..

edit: i didnt lose it, but theres no difference with the old file
im gonna try setting the delay even longer
[it was probably my problem, i thought there were 60 miliseconds in a second ]

edit2: yay! starting audio 1200ms later seemed to have done the trick! thanks!

edit3: non-yay the first 15 mins or so are okay now, but it slowly gets out of sync again.
I tried B, but that doesnt seem to do anything good...
Ive tried both options together, but that doesnt work either.

Conclusion: The A helped, at least now it starts off right, but after while it gets slowly out of sync again.

so.. any additional ideas?

With this option, what fps value do you see in the bracket and what is the original fps value?

and next to no change it says the current is 25.000

Have you considered the possibility of your CPU being overtaxed during playback, thus resulting in the gradual audio desynch.?

no, because its the same when i restart or if i skip immediately to the end: it's more and more off-sync to the end.


I have uploaded the file to the server, so if anyone wants to help me, PM me and ill give the url.. its 732 meg though

the reason i actually go trough all of this trouble because its a bit of a birthday gift for my mom (it isnt available on DVD or VHS)

Try this........

Resave the avi file with vdub with the audio and video set to direct stream copy. If there are any bad frames in the movie that are causing the out of sync problem - this usually can fix it.

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

The file contains a VARIANT of either an .MP2 or .MP3 audiostream (hence the "unknown (tag 0055)". In order to convert it to a more readily addressable format (You may still have to resynch after doing this - but it should be easier to accomplish):

1) I'd suggest that you use an audio editing program, such as GoldWave to extract (automatically) and convert the audiostream to Uncompressed PCM (.WAV) audio. To do this, simply open GoldWave and "drag and drop" the .AVI onto the primary GoldWave window. Select "Save as" from the "File" dropdown menu - and then select the filetype and enter a new name.

2) Close GoldWave. Open VirtualDub

3) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, set to "No audio" and load the ORIGINAL .AVI

4) Change the "Audio" setting to "WAV audio". Load your newly created .WAV audio file

5) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy" and "Audio" to "Full Stream Processing"

6) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose the .MP3 setting (at the appropriate frequency) of your choice

7) Save with a new filename

Other than making the file 1 GB bigger, no change

I mean, I do have sound in virdub, but its still off sync (even with the skew in place)

If you have a fast connection and no bandwidth limitations (and you are willing to do so ), you can download the original quite fast from my server, so you can have a better look at it.

Is the NEW file out of synch by a consistent number of seconds throughout the entire video, or does it change?

but you are right, i forgot step 6

I have NO idea what compression to choose so i just chose Windows Media Audio V2... the others i didnt really recognize...

hmm.. that wasnt much of a compression :s any idea wich one i SHOULD have chosen? (see attachment)

by the way, it still made no difference
