How to make a perfect copy DivX CD

There are a lot of progs out there, like Gknot, DVD2AVI + VirtualDub and some more.
But with that high resolution you will get max 40 mins of high quality DIVX onto one CD. And you need a powerful PC for playback.

I would suggest you aim for a resoultion of 640*xxx which is more feasbile and provides a better balance between quality and file size.

Yes, yes, we know all that.

I have a similar question. I do not mind to put a movie on two or three CD's, but I want it perfect quality.

I can encode a 200 Meg file into 15 Meg, but the video quality is not perfect.

PLEASE give some real usefull answers.

No problem - you probably don't know in any case.

I managed to do it, with FlaskMPEG. I downloaded the latest version, as well as the latest version of DivX - the older one did not work very well.

The key is to keep the screen size the same! And use multi pass. Set the Divx console (FOR FIRST PASS) to about 3 meg - and remember to select the First Pass of Multimass. Then select for the SECOND pass, the "nth pass" in the Divx Console. Again using about 3 meg.

The quality is PERFECT, and I got 3.5 gig down to 1.5 gig!

NOW at least I was able to help a NEWBE like myself - even though I'm a smart-a$$.

Maybe a DVD MASTER can learn something form a newbe - LIKE mabe to answer the question!

Good for you. But you skould know that you sould try keep it 1.4gb or under for easy backup. Also that those settings are not rules garaunting that you'l get perfect quality all the time.

By the way i would highly not recommend using Flask. If you consider yourself as a newbie, try GKnot. They are various guides available explaining everything.

You've used my favorite program, so I'm glad to hear that you're pleased with your results.

However, I'm curious to know (if you have or can ascertain the information) a few things:

Do you know how large the DVD movie's original videostream is?

Do you know how many .AC3 audiostreams (usually different languages and "Director's Commentary") there are?

Do you know how many different subtitle choices there are?

The reason I'm asking is that based on the low percentage of what you believe to be "compression" attained while maintaining original 720x480 resolution, I'd almost be willing to wager that by simply combining the original DVD's .M2V videostream with ONE of the .AC3 audiostreams converted to compliant .MP2 format, the resultant MPEG2 file would be about the same size as your DivX-compressed .AVI - with a lot less effort and time consumed...

Sorry, you lost me there!

There was two audio streams and about 10 subtitles. I only used the first audio and no subtitles.

I do not understand what you want me to do... The VOB files were 3.5 Gig in total. I take your point on keeping it below 1.4 Gig. Adjusting the sampling a little below 3 Meg will probably do the trick. I tried many of the claimed "GUI" converters, but they need a little bit of Window's "Plug and Play"!

I use DVD Decriptor or Smartripper to get the VOB files to me hard drive, and then Flask. This process is slow, but it works easy enough. But I'll try some of the other software as well.

I notice that most of the Guides are outdated! Especially with the new DivX.

Yes, Flask is VERY slow.

What I still need to figure out is:
* How to cut out the beginning of the movie, i.e. the intro. VOB split does not seem to work for the beginning - only for the end. If I change the starting point in Flask, it does NOTHING!
* How to actually use MP3 for the Audio - LAME MP3 I think it's called.
* How to split my final AVI file into TWO 700 Meg parts - if this could be automatic in Flask, it would be excellent!

Based on your response to me (I think), it would appear that my questions are beyond your ken, so feel free to forget them.

Essentially, I was suggesting that you probably have not, in fact, compressed anything - merely eliminated several audio streams and subtitle streams...

Cutting using flask

To cut the beginning of movies using Flask you delete the current job then move the slider to where you want the movie to start, and set a beginning tab (Button that looks like an L)

Use Besweet to get Lame MP3 which should then be multiplexed using VirtualDub and then use VirtualDub to split it in to two 700mb files.

Flask doesn't split

I tried the "set beginning" and "set end" but it still converts the whole movie. Is there a setting that I must set or something to ensure that it does use the "set beginning" feature?

What they were refering to as far as the different data streams for other audio and subtitles was this:
If you use Smartripper and select the option of STREAM PROCCESSING It will show you all of the different audio, subtitle and angle streams that are there. By only selecting the video stream and the one audio stream that you want to convert it will only rip those 2 things and leave everything else alone. Then you will see the true size of the original video and one audio stream for compression comparison. It also makes ripping quicker.
