It is better than Smart Smoother (don't know about 2D cleaner; I have never used it), in the sense that it removes less details. However, smart smoother still leaves the resultant video blurred. If all you are looking for is light smoothing only, Convolution3D remains the better choice. If you are looking at softening a video strongly for the purpose of making it much more compressible (for example, to be used with low bitrates), then Smart Smoother can do the job well.

I would generalise the smoothing (lossy) power of the filters this way:
Smart Smoother >> MSmooth (default values) >> Convolution3D (Anime HQ preset)

Hmm, what numbers do Anime HQ use for convultion3D anyway? I always figured that had somethin to do with their near perfect rips

Oh wait a minute, isnt C3D a plugin for avisynth? Is it the same plug in as general convolution in VD?

Uhh, no. It's a preset given from the Convolution3D Readme. It has nothing to do with the fansub group you mentioned.

To be frank, hardly any fansub groups offer near perfect rips. Firstly, the codec in use will always determine how good the final AVI quality is. Secondly, a lot of them allocate high amounts of bits to the video stream but tend to sacrifice audio quality (by going 96-112kbps). There is nothing about high quality here.

          Yes.

and No. Convolution3D is not the same as General Convolution.

Bleh, video quality still rocks nonetheless

I place as much emphasis on the audio quality as well as the video. There is nothing about quality when the ears have to hurt from bad audio.

Besides that, I have created my own rips and compared them to the creations of these fansub groups. Suffice to say, I do not see anything spectacular about any of their releases ...
