50gig avi - down to 820mb??? Possible?

Im trying to encode a 50gig avi file down to 820mb. Im getting the following message when converting inside virtualdub:
"Video source avi [icdecompress] error: unspecified error (-100). Does anybody know what this means and how to fix it? Has anyone done this type of conversion before?How?

(running win2000, intel p4 1.8gig, using vdub, divx4 beta codec @ 573kbs and 96kbs with de-interlace, cropping and resizing filters.

lol how did u capture a 50 GB video?
didnt u compress it at once?

seems like the error messages concerns about the compression of the video.
Check which audio and which video compression the file has by right click on it and look for audio compr and video compr

I think VirtualDub doesn't open avi files over 5GB I think. Is the AVI FILE DIVX? if not then convert it to MPEG2 on the highest quality possible then to DIVX. cause it works for me (well, not 50GB avi file but 2GB generally)

well, here are the settings I used to capture it. Im using a pinnacle dv500 capture card, to capture a vhs 4 hour video.

the problem is, my capture card, only allows me to capture in the above settings. Which is pretty shit. I wonder if there is a way around it...

as i only have experience with the hauppage tv card i dont know for sure but:

have u ever tried other capture progs? try freevcr, u can record as mpeg4/v1 or v2 (note: not mpeg1 mpeg2) or divx and can choose audio compression too (mpg 128 44khz).
I mostly record with 1800 kb/sec
yesterday i recorded 2h15min with 1650 kb/sec in 1,7 GB (lol no 50 GB for 4 h)

have it a try (but i dont know how far your tv card supports this prog)
dont forget to have radium mp3 codec installed when u want to capture using audio compression mpg 128 44khz.

Hi there. I am a big fan of hauppauge wintv GO, probably the best capture cards I ever had!

These are the settings that I used to "break the world record":


320*240 YU12 NO RECOMPRESSION
30fps
CD quality audio (44100Hz)


that's really all the settings I used to capture.

then I did editing and converted it to MPEG2 and encode it 2 times to make the quality PERFECT, then to DIVX 3.11alpha fast motion 75crisp and 6000 bitrate.

I may be a little OT but...
u keep talking about encoding several times to gain in quality...
I don't really understand what u mean.
You mean this? you've got source a, you encode it and u get b, then u encode b and u get c... and c is better than both b and a... if that's what u mean I don't really understand how that would be possible.
If u only mean c is better than b, but still worse than a, then I still don't understand how encoding(basically, comressing) may increase the quality (adding data) of the source movie!!

Did you find the help you needed? I work with a DC1000 which is very similar to the DV500. There is a way to capture at a higher compression. Let me know if you still need help.
