Question bout 2pass/multipass

whats the best way to do 2 or more pass encoding when youre capturing and encoding on the fly from VCR. at the moment I just capture at 1-pass-quality (93%) then encode the captured divx again. Using 5.02 codec. Does the 2pass option create a vbr divx and what bitrate would you use for the 1st and second pass if you want vidoe to average around 750kbps, my main goal is to keep quality near to what i capture originally but decrease the file size.
i know this has prob been explained before so if no one can be bothered answering then some links to sites/other threads taht would help would be appreciated, thanks.

If you are going to reencode, why not capture at 100% ?.

750kbps for both passes. It's up to the codec to stay as close to the requested filesize as possible. There is no magic involved.

I dont have neough disk space to capture at 100%, say with huffy codec, cos i could only capture about 30 min at a time then encode-burn on CD and do the next time interval.

just want to know if theres a way to preserve my original 1pass encoded capture's quality BUT have a more efficient bitrate allocation throughout the movie, as its mainly NBA footage and theres plenty of scenes that could use better allocation than the orignal 1pass quality encode option.

I was reffering to 100% quality based in divx. Which is not lossless like huffyuv, and uses only a fraction of the bitrate. (at 100% you would probably get about twice the size you get at 93%). Huffyuv uses about 10-20 times more than that.

The codec will do the best it can, at any given bitrate, but nothing is perfect.

another question

thanks for the advice, i have another question now is there anyway to apply a watermark in adobe premiere OR use the logo filter in vdub without re-encoding the original DivX, or if it hass to be done, what settings should i use in the DivX settings to keep the video as close to the original avi as possible?

No, to add a logo or watermark you have to reencode.
