DivX Version Checker and codec installer?

Hey! Im new to the whole DivX encoding world and I would like to know if there is anyway to
1- Use a javascript to check if the DivX codec is present
2- If it isnt, use the same javascript to start the installation program
3 once that is done, embed the divx player into an HTML document
The javascript and HTML document, Divx Movie and codec installation apps will all be contained on one CD.

A similar question was posted to these forums several months ago. While what you are proposing is certainly achievable, the consensus here was that it would be inappropriate to provide the means for automatically (without the user's abililty to choose/control) installing software on someone's system - since such a procedure could quite easily be used for nefarious purposes, such as installing viruses, etc...

MPLAYER and VIDEOLAN are two software players that come bundeled with the divx/xvid and many other video/audio codecs. These players require no installation or any installation of codecs.

MPLAYER and VIDEOLAN are available for Linux and Windows based ose's.

I do not want to do so without user intervention, at the point were the installation program would be started, I would like to be able to ask the user if he wants to cancel the installation or procede to install it. Its for my end of year album in high school, we want to include a cd-rom with some picture and videos on it.... now since some people dont even know How to INSTALL a program, so... I want to have some ease of use... like the auto installation on the internet, you are prompted and have the choice to accept or refuse the installation.
