Problems trying to convert from MP2 (Video) to Divx/Xvid

Hi!

I use VirtualDub (VirtualDubMod_1_5_1_1a_all_inclusive) to try to convert videos from MP2 to Divx 4 (Low) and to Xvid.

The original video is full screen (No black stripes on the sides)
The output file comes out squashed by two black stripes (The video shrinks to make room for the stripes, making the characters appear like midgets)


What can I do??

By "MP2", I presume you are referring to either MPEG-2 or MPEG-2 SuperVideoCD

A) What player are you using to play the original MPEG-2 video?

B) What player are you using to play the .AVI?

C) What is the resolution of the original MPEG-2 video?

D) What is the resolution of the .AVI?

E) If the .AVI is "squashed with two black stripes, making the characters appear like midgets", wouldn't these stripes appear on the TOP and BOTTOM, rather than on the sides?

MPEG-2 played by
A) Windows Media Player 6.4 and 9.

AVI played by
B) Windows Media Player 6.4 and 9.

MPEG-2 Resolution:
C) 640 x 480

AVI Resolution:
D) 640 x 288

E) Yeah, you're right, sorry, my mistake.
They're on the top and bottom.

I gather the AVI file's resolution has something to do with it... How do I set the output resolution in VirtualDub?

Actually, it appears that you've somehow inadvertently/mistakenly done that. By default, VirtualDub does NOT change the resolution when converting - If you input a 640x480 MPEG-2, it will output a 640x480 .AVI.

Therefore, it owuld appear that you've somehow inadvertently activated the RESIZE filter...

Nope... No resize filter...

I'm new to VirtualDub and I don't try features I don't need...
I just downloaded it, loaded the video (MPEG-2) and saved it as an AVI file.

I chose the Divx4 codec (Low)...

That being the case, perhaps there is a bug in the version of VirtualDubMod you're using, of which I'm not aware. If this is the case, you can remedy it by (ironically) using the RESIZE filter to set the output size to match the input size...

It's an internal VirtualDub filter. From the "Video" dropdown menu, click on "Filters", click on the "Add" radio button, and scroll down the list...

Which is better, Xvid or Divx?
And why can't I see the Divx5 codec in the "codec box"? (See enclosed screenshot)

BTW, does VirtualDub support WMV as well?
How can I convert into WMV format via VirtualDub?

I don't know - but what is the video codec listed as "5.1.1a"?

Nope (But an older version of VirtualDub, version 1.3C, does accept older format .ASF files for input)
