Help with .srt files

Hi, I have a new problem, involving subtitles again...

Recently, I acquired a Chinese movie (.avi) and a separate file with the english subtitles (.srt).

What software/combination of software can I use to apply the english subtitles permanently onto the .avi?

good news:
virtual dub can apply such a filter (vobsub one).
bad news:
you have to process (re-encode) the video.

but you can render subtitles while playing the video file thanks to vobsubDS - that's a better idea.
