Convert mpeg - avi

I try to convert a mpeg file to avi using VirtualDub-1.5.4.I and this error pops up "the source video stream uses a compression alogorith which is not compatible with AVI files.Direct stream copy cannot be used with this video stream." How do I fix this?

By not using direct stream copy.
ie full processing mode, but remember to select a compression method, otherwise you will get uncompressed output.
