TMPGENC quality

Hi there.

I was able to make HIGH quality videos in MPEG2 in tmpgenc but now I can't.

can some one help me please? it is really important, I tried all settings I can think of.

VERY HIGH quality
30fps
320*240

That's a standard resolution setting for MPEG1 (lower quality than is possible with MPEG2.

What are the specifics of your source file (format, resolution, etc.)?
Are you trying to make a "plain vanilla" MPEG2 file or an SVCD?

Usually I capture at 320*240 NO RECOMPRESSION YU12 then convert to MPEG2, re-encode 2-3 times then to DIVX 3.11alpha fast motion

I always use 320*240

I am trying to make an ordinary MPEG2 file, not VCD or SVCD

settings:

MPEG2 vid
320*240
30fps
CQ 100 max bitrate 9000

NTSC
MP@ML
Very high quality
10bits for DC

I brighten it up a bit

Audio is 44100Hz 192 or 128

It used to work, but not now. Even If I download vids of the net which are poor quality, I used to be able to improve it alot now I can't!

Some more information from you would possibly be enlightening:

1) What source are you capturing from?

2) What device are you using to capture?

3) What video format are you capturing in (.AVI, .MPG, .DV)?

4) What do you mean by "re-encode 2-3 times"?

5) What does subsequently converting to DivX have to do with your original question?

I was able to make BROADCAST quality vids with the same card but now I can't:

Hauppauge WinTV GO YU12 320*240
NO RECOMPRESSION
CD QUALITY AUDIO
AVI
30 fps


Then I enocode this freshly captured vid to MPEG2
when that is done then I open the MPEG 2 file (the one I encoded just now) and encode it again, I do this 3 times

But now there is a problem, the quality is worse even if I encode it once straight from avi to MPEG2

That 3-times-encoding is the worst thing i've ever heard. Encoding always is quality-reduction. Use VirtualDUB/nandub with some good filter like dynamic-noise-reduction, VHS-Filter, ...

Or try to encode it 10-100 times ))

NO BECAUSE IT WORKS FINE FOR ME! NO QUALITY REDUCTION.

Anyway what I am saying now is that it still gives the poorest MPEG2 quality from a high quality source, even if I encode it from avi to MPEG2 on the highest quality once directly.

Please get the facts right

I really want tohelp you, but I can't imagine why you dont use the VD-filters. In your second post you wrote that you encode to DivX-fast, so I think you want to convert a captured avi to a DivX-avi-file. Right? I do the same thing in a different way. Maybe it helps you to describe whyt I do to get an avi video.

1) Capture in a resolution that is higher than the resolution you want to get (384x288), use no compression or any compression you want with the highest bitrate (DivX-Fast, Indeo,...)

2) Open the captured video in nandub (or VirtualDUB).

3) Cut the video

4) use the following filters:
a) dynamic noise reduction
b) all other quality enhancements (VHS-stabilzer, contrast, color ...)
c) cropping (if there are any black borders around the video)
d) resize (to resize the video to 320x240)

5) Select DivX-Low-Motion with the calculated bitrate and mp3 (128kbps seems to be more than enought for TV-capture)

I think that gives me the best possible quality.

I completly agree with you, benderman (sorry if I spelt it wrong).

The reason I want to convert to MPEG2 is because it gives a me a better quality pic for some reason and therefore it reduces file size and better quality in DIVX fast.

But TMPGENC is producing the worst quality, fast!
