Try dynamic compression on the audio file.

Dynamic Compression, as the name says, involves compressing/narrowing the dynamic range of a given audio stream (i.e. so that quiet passages don't sound over-quiet and loud passages are not deafening).

Extract out the audio using Virtualdub's Direct Stream Copy and open the audio file in an audio editor capable of performing dynamic compression, such as CoolEdit. Perform the dynamic compression (a few tries might be needed for successful and satisfactory results), re-compress the audio file (required everytime an audio file has been modified) and mux the modified file to the original video file.

        Cheers.
