Problems Converting XviD to SVCD (MPEG2)...

Hey gang....I have a set of XviD movies that I want to convert to SVCD. Using the standard method of Virtual Dub and TMPGEnc to rip out the audio track then recompile into MPG2 is not working. I first had to change the 4CC to DIVX to trick TMPGEnc into thinking it was a divx file. For some reason I consistently got invalid pointer errors when trying to select the video file. Then while converting I was getting the audio track only and no video.

So....I guess what I am asking is - how can I convert these files into SVCD (MPEG2)? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would really like to start from scratch on this...

First, if not already done, download and install an XviD codec (Hopefully, you still have the ORIGINAL XviD file, WITHOUT a changed FOURCC header).

1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

It would appear that what I originally said is all that's needed (since you've indicated that you've successfully taken care of the audio) - if not already done, download and install an XviD codec (Hopefully, you still have the ORIGINAL XviD file, WITHOUT a changed FOURCC header). uuhhhhh...

no offense - but what are you getting at? I have already taken those basic steps - and has not gotten me anywhere, yes, even with the file without the altered fourcc header. Had I not had an issue at that point I would not be writing to you.....so....here is where I stand....confused as to why the process is not working.

And how would I know that from your posts here. I'm not a mind reader ;>}

1) Have you successfully PLAYED these XviD-compressed .AVIs?

2) Are you aware that they are in PAL (not NTSC) format? Have you accounted for this in your conversion process in any way - or are you trying to create PAL SVCDs?

While converting an Xvid file I am also getting the audio track only and no video.

I have the proper codecs installed and i can play the file in Window Media Player.

But when i try to convert it using TMPGEnc, i get no video !!!

i have been having the same trouble. real one player will play the file but it won't encode. i am encoding a tv episode from xvid to mpeg and i get audio but no picture. any help would be appreciated. i've tried several programs, encoders and codecs.

i found an amazing thing today. as i went to save an episode i was having trouble encoding (the one mentioned above) i proceeded in nero as if burning a vcd. i did it because of habit instead of saving it as data i saved as vcd. nero encoded it for me and it came out perfect. just wanted to pass this on. if it helps anyone post it here and let me know.

Change the "directshow multimedia file reader" to a high priority, something like 2, in VFAPI plugins in environmental settings.

I've tried changing priority in tmpegnc to no avail. Doesn't work. It's obvious that tmpegnc just has a problem with Xvid video streams more often than not.

i agree with that.. now, i have more likely the same problem... i have a xvid file with an ac3 audio.. i change the environmental setting/Vplugin to higher priority(directshow). put the desired setting that i need to comeout.... and when i start encoding the TMPGenc Freeze and stop responding.....


any ideas?

No ideas how to fix it directly but I'll tell you what I did as a workaround. Works best if your xvid is of very high quality.

I extracted the audio to wav and converted the xvid video stream to Divx 4.

As always, there's probably another way to to this, but I used virtualdubmod to open the xvid file, choosing NOT to apply a CBR header if the file has VBR audio. Scan video stream for bad frames. Choosing a processing range up to the first video error, extracted the audio to a wav file, then I recompressed the video stream in that range, using DivX 4 codec, setting on quality-based 100%. Did the same thing again, skipping bad frames in several spots throughout the movie. (very important for mantaining audio sync)

Ended up losing about 6 seconds of movie but now I had 3 pieces of silent video with 3 corresponding wav files. I didn't notice any significant picture quality loss having the divx set at 100% quality. Basically you want to end up with silent DivX video and wav sound from your xvid. Done right, you will keep audio sync. I used the new files for input into tmpgenc.

tmpgenc had no problem with the divx vid stream, and of course, no problem with wav sound.

That's the only way I've got a decent VCD from an xvid. tmpgenc just can't work with xvid so I just re-encoded to divx. errors in the video stream, or VBR audio complicate the process, but it can be done.

ok, got the problem.... it works now.. i have ffdshow... and this program make TmpGenc freeze and stop working..... when i remove it to my system walla.. it runs smooothly....


finally i manage to extract the Ac3 audio on a xvid file using the Virtual Dub....
