I have the same problem, followed (unknowingly) the same path and although I am actually German I couldn`t get any help either so you haven't missed that much. I've got a bunch of TV-episodes that I ripped from a DVD I bought recently and they all have this annoying Intro followed by a "...previously on..." and finally a " ...in the next episode..". Since I still have the original DVD in case of cheking for details I wanted to make one large copy with all this stuff cut out. And even though I ripped them on the same day with the same software I got this error after successfully joining 7 episodes together and there was no way to get VirtualDubMod doing the job any further.

Since you mentioned "EO Video" (which also dislike) a bit earlier in this thread, I rememberd having that on some old cd from a magazin. I installed it and it did the job! - unlike the also mentioned "easy video joiner" which (in the 7-day trial version) sucessfully failed at exactly the same point as VDM with a pretty lame "..there was an error, task aborted".

So for a fast solution you might want to try "EO Video" again for joining purposes - even it feels somewhat unconfortable.

If you ever get a response from the guys of VirtualDubMod please let me know, I'd like to get the job done rather by VDM than by EO

For joining files with slightly different frame rate you may also try AviUtl.
