DIVX Brightness Decrease/Color Discoloration

Hi, i am having some problems. Whenever i encode a video in DIVX the color is very distorted and it is very dark. I am attempting to encode a DV video file at 1000kbps, 320x480. Divx 5.1, NTSC colors. Can anyone help me get my videos to look normal? I have tried increasing the brightness and contrast but it does no good. I am not sure if it is my computer or if it is the file. Other DIVX files that i have look fine, except for the ones i encode so i am assuming it is my settings some how, but i dont know what.

Actually, to me it doesn't look darker - it looks "murkier" or less detailed...

even at any detailed resolution it still creates the same darkend effect though.

What is the resolution of the original?

the original is DV video, 720x480 i believe

So the conversion went like this: 720x480 DV to 320x480 DivX-compressed video? In that case, it is clear why there has been a noticable loss of definition.

What would be optimal DV compression settings?

Try to keep to the same resolution (720x480) and use Quality-based compression instead (80-100% quality should suffice).
