In order to do this, you would have to re-encode the entire movie. If you have the original eg. DVD then you should go for it. I don't recommend re-encoding an already encoded movie because quality degrades with every copy. Why do you want to down-size in the first place?

      Virtual Dub can do this.
load your avi (divx or xvid ) in V dub
under audio i use direct stream copy, unless you want to change this too
under video click full processing mode
      click video, filters ,add
click on the resize filter, click on ok
put in your new width and height
for filter mode there are debates as to which is better for resizing larger and smaller. myself i see no difference between bicubic, and precise bilinear. i've also used nearest neighbor.
      click ok
      click on video, compression
      click on xvid or divx
i prefer xvid but you use what you like, xvid or divx
from here you can configure the encoder
when done click on file, save as avi

        Tigerman8u,

Of course Virtualdub can do this, but as I mentioned in my previous post it's not recommended because it will degrade the quality of the film. It's better to recognize the reason for doing this and wether or not the degradation of quality is acceptable.

Ok, now I understand...basically the source videoat 640x272 is anamorphic with the 2.35:1 ratio. If the picture is small (from top to bottom) I don't think there's much you can do about it. Some movies are "smaller" than others, eg. Devil's Advocate is tiny compared to some other flicks (depending on the DVD of course). Changing the aspect ratio will only stretch it out so the people for example will look funny, too tall and too thin. Unless there is a program that can chop off the sides and maintain the aspect ratio (I know of no such program, but quite possible there is one) changing the resolution from anamorphic to widescreen will only screw it up.

Oké , I can try by using back the other program like flashmpeg , dvdx ,..

I tryed them al but autoGK by godianknot is the easiest and best program I have used and the quality is very good, the only thing in autogk is that you can't change the setting of the wide

"the only thing in autogk is that you can't change the setting of the wide"

Change the ratio and this is what will happen:

"the people for example will look funny, too tall and too thin"

Flask, and dvdx WILL NOT take care of this problem....

Well, if it looks small on a 32 inch then it will also look small on a 42 inch, just a little bigger. Which movie is this btw?

And yes, I encode many, many films. The "smallest" file I've ever encoded was the Devil's advocate.
